Argentine leader names drug and crime ministers
December 02, 2013 11:06 PM

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina: Argentina's president has named a new security minister and appointed a Roman Catholic priest to run the national agency that treats drug addicts and fights drug trafficking.

Father Carlos Molina has spent years ministering to addicts and is close to President Cristina Fernandez's sister-in-law, Social Welfare Minister Alicia Kirchner. His posting was announced after a highly critical report from Argentina's church leaders said the government isn't taking trafficking seriously.

Monday's surprise was the resignation of Security Minister Arturo Puricelli after only six months in the job. The president named Maria Cecilia Rodriguez, a veteran of Argentina's civil defense efforts, to replace him.

Both appointees will be sworn in on Wednesday.
