Peruvian president Ollanta Humala in mid-December signed a decree authorising defence minister Pedro Cateriano to engage in a government-to-government contract to procure a new artillery system.
IHS Jane's understands that the Peruvian Army has selected the NORINCO Type 90B 122 mm multiple launcher rocket system (MLRS) to fulfil its JUCRAM Project, which states a need to improve the Land Force's Southern Operational Command's field artillery capability.
A contract worth an estimated USD42 million will include 40 MLRS along with munitions, engineering, command and control, and other support vehicles.
Selection of the Chinese MLRS follows the army's choice of the Ulan Ude Mi-171ShP under Project SALKANTAY in November, which will lead to the delivery of eight helicopters in 2014.
