Alleged 'destabilisation attempt' was planned for March 20

Thirty military officers have been arrested for allegedly plotting to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, national newspaper Ultimas Noticias reported on Monday.

“High-level sources” at the presidential palace told reporters that most of those arrested were from the air force, but some were from the national guard, navy and army.

Seven generals were included in the haul.

The officers were put under observation after loyal members of the military told the intelligence services that “something strange” was being planned.

Ultimas Noticias said the “destabilisation attempt” was planned for March 20, with “air operations and eventual shooting of soldiers and other events planned to cause confusion and clashes.”

I'll bet the answer is "most."

2. I wonder how many were subsidized by the CIA and its sister organizations

I truly doubt this was a home-grown effort. It has no support on the ground.

4. Are you seriously suggesting that Diosdado Cabello's buddies are "subsidized by the CIA?"

Do you know who Diosdado Cabello IS?

Here--some pictures for you:

Diosdado is the fellah at the "right hand of the lord," in those photos, as it were...

Unlikely in the extreme that the "CIA" had anything to do with this. But you can count on Maduro to make that accusation--I think he's probably near the apogee of paranoia at this point in time.

5. I think this is/was--if it's even true--a "coup from the left" attempt.

It could be that Cuban spies--and the VZ military is seeded with them these days--are naming names of people who are entirely innocent, but who are close to Cabello, in an effort to marginalize him. It could also be that Maduro is paranoid as hell (ya think? I sure do!) and his powers of absolute decree have gone to his thick head.

I wouldn't put anything past Diosdado, though. He is the Bolivarian equivalent of Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Rummy, all wrapped up in one person. Mendacity is his middle name!
