Chile's digital TV bill finally signed into law
By Patrick Nixon - Thursday, May 22, 2014
Chile's President Michelle Bachelet on Thursday signed into law legislation for the introduction of digital TV and announced that the analog switch-off will take place in five years' time, local press reported.
Implementation of digital TV has already begun in certain cities. Chile has chosen the Brazilian adaptation of the Japanese standard ISDB-T.
The bill for digital TV was introduced in 2008 during Bachelet's previous administration but has been stuck in congress for five years due to disagreements on fine detail.
"In five years' time, analog transmissions will cease. But during that period, users will still be able to access both analog and digital TV," Bachelet said. The president added that Chile's soccer matches during the World Cup in Brazil next month would be broadcast on open TV in high definition.
Bachelet said the jump from analog to digital was much greater than the change from black and white to color. "It will allow us to increase the convergence between television and internet, bringing us to smart television," she said.
