BOSTON — U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy is spending the weekend in Central America.

The Massachusetts Democrat is joining a bipartisan congressional delegation led by Congressman James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma.

Kennedy and six other members of Congress are planning to travel to El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

Kennedy said it's critical to work with the nation's partners in Central America to address violence, drugs and human trafficking to help stem the humanitarian crisis that is driving thousands from the region to cross the border.

He said he hopes to gain a better understanding of the circumstances in the three countries that have left families feeling like they have no choice but to make the perilous journey north.
