Venezuela Slams UN Human Rights Head for Supporting 'Anti-democratic Elements'

Venezuela says U.N. high commissioner for human rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein's handling of controversial cases against far right-wing opposition leaders is “surprising and unusual.”

Venezuela's foreign ministry hit back at the United Nations' top human rights official on Wednesday, accusing him of failing to be “fair” and “objective.”

“The (U.N.) High Commissioner (for Human Rights), Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein has made accusations that harm the dignity and decorum which should be preserved in relations between sovereign member states of the United Nations,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The statement was in response to comments made by Zeid on Monday, criticizing the imprisonment of far-right opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez and former opposition mayor Daniel Ceballos.
