The president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez, has announced that the country’s Toncontin International Airport in Tegucigalpa; will soon be shut down and a new airport worth $135m will be constructed inside the United States military base of Palmerola (Soto Cano Air-force Base in Comayagua Honduras).

--------------

Palmerola, that permanently houses 600 US troops, is the biggest military base in Central America and is the main headquarters of the US Southern Command. It was used during the Cold War to plan and execute attacks against countries including Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama and many countries in the Caribbean.

The Honduran government will fund the construction of the new airport with the help of a $80m loan from the government of Spain. The remaining amount will be sponsored by a private company that will be given all of the airport’s revenues for the next three decades.
