Palmerola, that permanently houses 600 US troops, is the biggest military base in Central America and is the main headquarters of the US Southern Command. It was used during the Cold War to plan and execute attacks against countries including Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama and many countries in the Caribbean.
The Honduran government will fund the construction of the new airport with the help of a $80m loan from the government of Spain. The remaining amount will be sponsored by a private company that will be given all of the airports revenues for the next three decades.
