Arrest Warrant Issured for 5 Linked to Honduran Fraud Scandal

The court decision shows no sign of quelling the popular movement and ongoing calls for President Hernandez's resignation

Honduran prosecutors issued an arrest warrant on Friday for five officials found to have committed fraud in the country's recent social security embezzlement scandal that has rocked the government and fueled widespread calls for the resignation of President Juan Orlando Hernandez, Honduras' Diario La Prensa reported.

According to prosecutors, the accused violated their official duties and knowingly signed off on the purchase of overpriced medical equipment from the private medical solutions company Dimesa, with which the Social Security Institute, known as IHSS, has had a contract since 2011.

President Juan Orlando Hernandez and his National Party have been linked to the US$200 million IHSS scandal. Hernandez admitted to receiving money from corrupt sources during his 2013 presidential campaign, though he claimed he did not know the origin of the funds at the time.

Mass anti-corruption protests in over 20 cities across the country for the third consecutive Friday night reiterated calls for the creation of a United Nations International Commission Against Impunity in Honduras to strengthen investigations and accountability, and denounced U.S. meddling in the country.
