Former Panamanian President is facing fresh criminal charges for his role in an illegal wiretap operation.
The Panamanian Supreme Court launched a criminal case Monday against former President Ricardo Martinellifor his involvement in illegal wiretapping during his administration (2009-2014).
The most recent charges stem from allegations made earlier this year, claiming that under the Martinelli administration, 150 people including business leaders and politicians had been illegally monitored by the national security council.
Several high-ranking officials close to the former head of State are being investigated for their involvement in the spy scandal, including Alejandro Garuz and Gustavo Perez, former directors of the security council.
This marks the second criminal investigation launched against the former president, who is already accused of a US$45 million dollar embezzlement scheme.
