Stephen Fry and husband Elliot Spencer forced to flee Honduras honeymoon because of homophobia

Stephen Fry and husband Elliot Spencer forced to flee Honduras honeymoon because of homophobia

Newlyweds Stephen Fry and Elliot Spencer cut their dream trip short…

By Ellie Henman News Writer on Monday, 15 June 2015 at 09:16

Stephen Fry and Elliot Spencer had to cut their honeymoon short after the couple faced issues because of their sexuality.

After they wed in January, the pair had spent months planning their dream trip to South America. At the time, Stephen, 57, said of their plans, “We’re planning a huge adventure. We’re delaying our honeymoon so I can relax for longer.”

But sadly, the trip was cut short. In Honduras, although homosexuality is not illegal, gay marriage is banned and according to recent reports the country has “widespread disdain for homosexuals”.

“We had a problem when we visited Honduras on holiday,” Elliot, 27, told the Mail. “It was homophobia. I don’t want to go into detail, but we had to leave.”

Besides which, they really should have honeymooned in South America - more precisely: Chile, Argentina, or Uruguay - where it's generally much safer for both gay tourists and mainstream tourists alike.

If it had to be Central America, they should have at least stuck to Costa Rica and/or Panama - especially being famous men of means such as they are (what with the kidnapping risk).

Speaking of which, it's been years since I've seen Stephen Fry's 'Wilde'; let me go see if I can find it online.
