Cubans praised for apartheid fight

Cubans praised for apartheid fight

Sunday 28 June 2015 20:05

Limpopo Premier and Chairperson of the ANC, Stanley Mathabatha, has urged all South Africans to appreciate the role that Cuba played in helping South Africans fight against the apartheid government.

He was speaking at the welcoming function of the Cuban Five in Polokwane at the premier's guest house. They spent ten years in prison in the USA after they were convicted on various charges including espionage and conspiracy to commit murder. They are visiting South Africa to show gratitude for South Africa's efforts to have them released from prison.

The Cuban five were warmly welcomed by members of the tripartite alliance at the premier's guest house in Polokwane. They were taken to a closed meeting before addressing the media. Premier Mathabatha says the visit is aimed at showing both South Africans and Cubans the role the two countries played in the fight against apartheid in South Africa and the economic blockade of Cuba by the USA.

Mathabatha says South Africa has campaigned against economic sanctions imposed on Cuba. "We are hosting this Cuban five just to portray a sense of solidarity to them to say to the Cuban people to say to the South African people to say that look, those people who we were fighting for their release are now released, please we are thanking the South African and people of Liposome for supporting us when this people were in jail when we were campaigning internationally as the people of South Africa the people of Limpopo in particular for them to be released."
