The gruesome find near Venezuelas border with Colombia comes during an operation to rid the area of violent paramilitaries. Venezuelan security forces discovered a dismembered and buried body in the town of Llano de Jorge in Tachira state, the border region with Colombia and the center of controversy between the two countries.
The body, which was discovered late Friday night, is believed to have been in the spot for around two months. It was found in a zone known to be controlled by paramilitaries, and where Italian Salvatore Marcuso operated, who is wanted for a string of crimes related to the right-wing paramilitary group Self Defense Units of Colombia (AUC).
The remains were discovered by a Venezuelan walking his dog, after which forensic teams were called and the body sent to a specialist center, according the border official General Carlos Alberto Martinez.
Martinez also said that he believed there to be mass graves in the area, and that operations would begin to locate them, before recalling that in May the military found such graves, including one with the bodies of five suspected paramilitaries and seven children.
