Peru: Former Dictator Is to Be Tried in 1978 Abductions of His Opponents

Peru: Former Dictator Is to Be Tried in 1978 Abductions of His Opponents
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SEPT. 10, 2015

A Peruvian judge has ordered the former military dictator Francisco Morales Bermúdez to stand trial in the 1978 abductions of 13 opponents. He is suspected of having the 13, including three journalists, flown to Argentina on a military plane. They were later deported to Mexico and Europe by Argentina’s military leaders under international pressure to release them. Peru’s judiciary confirmed Thursday via email that Judge Rafael Martínez had issued the order, also requiring that two former government ministers stand trial in the case. General Morales Bermúdez, 91, led Peru from 1975 to 1980. He was among a group of South American dictators who colluded at the time to suppress dissent through forced disappearances and killings.
