Del Caņo's response to Macri: "he demands 'unity' from us in order to get away with austerity."
Nicolás Del Caño, presidential candidate on the Leftist Workers' Front in the last Argentine elections, replied in no uncertain terms to a line in President Mauricio Macri's inaugural address today in which Macri asked for "consensus" and "unity" from the five other candidates who competed in the October 25 general election.
"The 'unity' and 'consensus' Macri expects have as their only intent that we may meekly accept his mega-austerity," he said.
Del Caño recalled that Macri made "zero poverty" into a frequent campaign slogan, while as Mayor of Buenos Aires over the last eight years the number of slum dwellers doubled to a record 300,000 (public housing is a local responsibility in Argentina, and Macri habitually spent 20% or less of the budgets the city legislature earmarked for housing).
He added that "there can be no unity between those on the giving end of austerity, and those on the receiving end. Crisis is something capitalists should pay for."
About the inaugural address itself, Del Caño remarked that "Macri spent 45 minutes hiding his true policies: sharp devaluation and massive utility and fare increases. He demands 'unity' from us in order to get away with austerity."
