Peru: Former Officials Convicted due to Narco-Pardons
Lima, Dec 14 (Prensa Latina) A Peruvian court sentenced to prison 14 former officials accused of taking bribes in exchange for pardons signed by former President Alan Garcia in his second term as president (2006-2011).
The National Criminal Court imposed the highest sentence, 13 years and eight months in jail, to the former head of presidential pardons committee, Miguel Facundo Chinguel.
The former official was convicted for leading a criminal organization, created to collect bribes in exchange for pardons, which were signed by Garcia.
Following the sentence, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, Alex Segura, recalled that it is still pending the case of the former Minister of Justice, Aurelio Pastor, who is also involved and due to the position he held, he has right to a parliamentary impeachment.
