Venezuela leftists challenge election of 22 opposition lawmakers

The leftist party of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Tuesday challenged the election of 22 opposition lawmakers in this month's landmark polls, according to opposition leaders who slammed a "procedural coup."

The opposition coalition MUD won a resounding victory in the December 6 legislative vote, ending 16 years of leftist majority in the oil-rich but troubled nation.

Jesus Torrealba, spokesman for the MUD, told a press conference that Maduro's United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) had filed a challenge against 22 incoming deputies before the Supreme Court.

"These are not representatives of the MUD, they are representatives of the people," Torrealba said of the lawmakers targeted.

If they support this, then they are no friends of democracy.

It seems that the current Chavista-majority National Assembly is desperate to designate new magistrates (all of them in league with the PSUV, of course, but they won't admit it) in the Supreme Court before the new incoming AN deputies take over on Jan 5. Perhaps they feel that without the SC, then they'll REALLY be screwed. They've depended this whole time on trying to control all institutions, but they are slowly but surely losing it, starting with the Electoral Council (thanks to some military personnel who did not wish to betray the constitution,) which led to losing the National Assembly. Only thing they have left now is the court, and if they lose that too, then the next thing for sure will be the presidency, and after that, it's either exile or a jail cell for all of them.
