The End to One Dictatorship in Venezuela

Marco Perez Jimenez led just another U.S.-backed brutal regime that only the people were able to overthrow.

It took 22 days and hundreds of thousands of tired, angered and frustrated Venezuelans to finally rid the country of a brutal, corrupt and very hated dictator that was backed, as usual, by the United States government who as always was only interested in Venezuela's oil and not in democracy or the well being of the people.

Gen. Marcos Perez Jimenez had ruled the country for six years with brutal oppression and absolute authoritarianism. He was feared and hated inside his country, and mocked elsewhere as the typical Latin American military despot that he was.

Washington didn't care, they were happy with his virulent anti-communism and his tolerant attitude toward foreign oil companies. In fact, in 1954, the U.S. shamelessly awarded him the Legion of Merit.

Perez, who was born in 1914 in the Venezuelan western border state of Tachira, was an army captain when he took part in a coup in 1945 that put the leftist Democratic Action Party in power. But, three years later in November 1948, he and two other officers imposed themselves as the country's leaders through a military Junta.
