Honduras: Nearly 600 Police Officers Committed Crimes
Tegucigalpa, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) Honduran authorities admitted today that nearly 600 police officers committed crimes, including homicides, torture and arbitrary detention.
The head of the Directorate of Research and Evaluation of Police Work, Oscar Vazquez, said that the evidence was detected in nearly 2.000 records of police agents that were analyzed.
The police officers who committed illegal acts will be submitted to the Special Commission for National Police's Purge and Transformation, he said.
The Commission, approved by Congress , demanded yesterday the suspension of 54 policemen allegedly involved in the murder of the head of the National Directorate of Counter-Narcotics (2009 ) and former security adviser Alfredo Landaverde (2011).
According to the government of Honduras, under the current purge process, more than 500.000 agents and officers could be removed from the force in the next 12 months.
