Cuban Religious Criticizes Decision against Pastors for Peace

Havana, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) The Council of Churches of Cuba (CIC) condemned the ruling of the US government that establishes the withdrawal of the status of tax-exempt charitable organization to the IFCO / Pastors for Peace, it was informed here today.

According to a press release, the CIC stated the measure seeks to intentionally undermine solidarity and fraternity between the peoples of the two nations.

It adds that the action pretends the US citizens abdicate their principles of solidarity with Cuba; and undermine the Cuban Revolution so that this, in turn, relinquishes its revolutionary principles; something never achieved, the document emphasized.

The CIC recalls in the document that for the past 25 years the church developed fraternal relations with the Interreligious Foundation for the Community Organization/Pastors for Peace and together they work for unity, love and solidarity between the two nations.

Cuban Institutions Condemn Measure against Pastors for Peace

Havana, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuban religious institutions condemned the decision made by the US government to withdraw the status of tax-exempt charity organization from IFCO/Pastors for Peace for not declaring their solidarity shipments to Cuba, the newspaper Granma reported on Wednesday.

We do not understand the situation being faced today by our brothers of IFCO (Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization Pastors for Peace), when the Cuban people have been one of the direct beneficiaries of several donations that have included medical equipment and medicines, among others, they said in an open letter.

The letter, signed by the Federation of Spiritualists of Havana, the Yoruba Cultural Association of Cuba, the Supreme Council of the Abacua Association of Cuba and the Bantu Religious Institution of Cuba, recalls that the links between Pastors for Peace and Cuba date back to more than 30 years ago.

In addition, they expressed gratitude for the solidarity, without any other remuneration than love and friendship, thanks to which Cuban religious institutions, hospitals and schools could exercise their functions in such special conditions as those imposed by the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba.

For years, the U.S.-based Pastors for Peace defied the embargo on Cuba with “caravans” of humanitarian aid hauled across the U.S.-Mexico border that were then shipped to the island.

In Havana, its founder, the Rev. Lucius Walker, was received like a hero.

Although the organization never applied for a license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control to bring aid to Cuba, it did not face reprisals, although U.S. authorities occasionally tried to withhold the shipments on the Mexican border.

But Pastors for Peace now faces punishment for its charitable acts from another U.S. agency: the Internal Revenue Service. The organization was recently informed that it will it lose its tax-exempt status for failing to declare the shipments to Cuba.
