4 teen girls killed, 27 injured after van carrying migrants crashes near Texas-Mexico border

Five people were killed and 27 others were injured Tuesday when a van they were travelling in hit a curve and flipped over about 70 miles from the Texas border, according to Mexican media reports.

El Mañana, which operates a newspaper in Reynosa, reported that the driver lost control of the van while moving at a high speed causing it to flip and roll and eject the passengers. The crash occurred around 8:50 p.m. on the Reynosa-Monterrey highway in General Bravo, Mexico, which is about an hour-and-a-half drive from McAllen.

One man and four teenage girls were the ones killed in the accident, El Mañana reported.

The white Chevrolet van was carrying 32 people, each of them a migrant headed to the U.S. from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and other Central American countries, the paper reported. Many of the families were traveling with their children and six have been hospitalized.
