The flagship USS Zumwalt project cost at least $4.4billion (£2.9bn) and is the largest and costliest destroyer ever built.
But the vessel suffered an engineering problem in the Panama Canal en route from Maine on the east coast of the US to San Diego on the west coast.
The 600 foot (183 metre), 15,000 tonne USS Zumwalt is the latest addition to America's naval fleet.
It had been scheduled to arrive in San Diego by the end of the year to start the activation of its weapon system.
