Argentina ex-leader Cristina Fernandez to go on trial

23 March 2017 Latin America & Caribbean

A judge in Argentina has ruled that the former president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, should stand trial on charges of financial mismanagement.

Ms Fernandez, 64, is accused of fraudulently administering state funds in 2015.

The former economy minister, Axel Kiciloff, and the former head of the central bank have also been charged.

Ms Fernandez, who governed from 2007 to 2015, said the case was politically motivated.

He and half his administration and their families, who bought dollar futures at 11 pesos - and then devalued the currency from 10 to 14 by decree in a single day. Mrs. Kirchner could have very easily - but did not (in fact she lost money by keeping her peso deposits in pesos).

It's akin to Tom Price's binge buying of certain medical stocks, just days before sneaking provisions in the budget that would benefit those same firms - except of course Price's insider trading didn't tank the economy the way Macri's did.
