Unfortunately, inflation is rampant in Venezuela. A 345% increase in salaries is pretty paltry in an economy where inflation is expected to be 1900% this year. Maduro refuses to release 'official' data in regards to the nations finances, and he disputes the 800% inflation increase reported last year (2016) Last year, the minimum wage increased 454%, but Maduro insists that workers are doing "better than ever!"

(11,119 posts)she had moved to this area because she was hired by the school district to teach Spanish to students. She told him that she was recently arrived from a South American country, I believe it was Venezuela. She was suffering culture shock here in the US because of the ATMs and drive-up windows at banks - where she came from the banks were rarely open for normal business hours anymore. She also told my brother that the idea of saving money was a totally old-fashioned thing to do in her home country as inflation was so bad then that the longer you hung onto your money, the less you were able to buy with it!
She related to my brother that one day there was a national transportation strike that lasted for several days - the strike started in the middle of the work day so commuters were trapped at work and had one helluva time getting home from work that first day...
