Two People Arrested in Panama Pence Protest
Published 17 August 2017 (18 hours 31 minutes ago)

Last week, the U.S. President Donald Trump said he would not rule out the option of military intervention in Venezuela.

Two students from the University of Panama have been arrested during a protest against the visit of the U.S. Vice President, Mike Pence.

Gilberto Solis, studying at the Faculty of Law and Political Science, and Rita Ramos, from the Humanities faculty, were detained while they were on campus.

Around 50 people, including workers and members of several social organizations, had been taking part in the demonstration. They burned an effigy showing Pence's face.

Several dozen people are protesting in downtown Panama City against a visit by Vice President Mike Pence to the Central American nation.

About 50 demonstrators including construction workers and members of leftist organizations have gathered at a monument to students who died during anti-U.S. protests in 1964.

A sign reads: "Venezuela, heart of the Americas. Stop U.S. interference in Latin America."
