Denis OBrien eyes Cuba for new underwater fibre optic cable

Deep Blue Cable spending $350m on undersea link to connect Caribbean islands

Deep Blue Cable, Denis O’Brien’s $350 million Caribbean undersea telco infrastructure company, is eyeing a potential landing on the communist island of Cuba for its high-speed fibre-optic cable, which would be used by broadband providers and internet companies.

Mr O’Brien has invested on a personal basis in Deep Blue, which this month begins preparatory work on threading a swathe of island nations around the region with fibre. The project aims to be operational by the end of 2019. Mr O’Brien has said the cost of the rollout may eventually rise to $450 million.

An initial 12 fibre landings over the next 30 months are pencilled in for markets including the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago.

Mr O’Brien’s Digicel is already a major telecommunications player in some of these markets.

Russia has infested Cuba over the last 2 years.

Trump has handed Cuba to Russia. Another Trump gift to Putin that most don't see.

Fiber optic is the LAST connection we need until Trump and our national security are stabilized.

in the region, to make money, even Baby Doc who was representing the Chinese in buying O'Brien out of Honduras.

How O'Brien got his initial wealth, from the first GSM license in Ireland, is one of the biggest scandals in Ireland of the last 50 years.

5. Why is it dangerous for the United States to have no ambassador in Cuba?
Mon Aug 21, 2017, 03:20 AM

Cuba had NO ambassadors in Cuba prior to Obama, after the people's revolution.

From Wikipedia:

The United States Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba is the official representative of the President of the United States to the head of state of Cuba, and serves as the head of the Embassy of the United States in Havana. Direct bilateral diplomatic relations did not exist between the two countries from 1961 to 2015. President Dwight D. Eisenhower severed relations following the Cuban Revolution on January 3, 1961.[1] Relations were subsequently restored by Cuban President Raul Castro and President Barack Obama on July 20, 2015.

With the restoration of relations in 2015, the president may nominate an ambassador, though the position has remained vacant since 1960. The embassy is currently run by a Chargé d'affaires ad interim, Scott Hamilton. The Chargé d'affaires and the embassy staff at large work in the American Embassy on the Malecón across from the Plaza de la Revolución in Havana, Cuba. Obama officially nominated DeLaurentis on September 27, 2016.[2]

Now it's back exactly the way fascist a-hole Republicans like it. Why would that arouse you enough to yammer that it bodes real danger for the US?

pandering to the Miami Cuban lobby, in discouraging trade with the US. This is going to allow Russia and China steal a march on the US, as Cuba opens up, all only 90 miles from Florida, for all trade, even military. It's incredibly shortsighted.

6. So funny, your link to an editorial from the Miami Herald. Hilarious.

Either you don't know much about the Herald, or you're hoping no one who saw your post knows.

Truly beneath most people.

No US diplomats in Cuba? Just the way it was after the revolution until 1915? Whoa! What a nightmare!

Maybe we'd better send the descendants of the racist, rightwing Cuban "exile" oligarch dirtbags who did the Bay of Pigs invasion and got their asses handed to them.

Who on earth do you imagine would take any of that seriously?

Denis O’Brien teams with Russian oligarch for $16bn plan

Funded by Putin to create telecoms, a Cuban fiber optic monopoly works well with his European telecom plan.

http://www.irishtimes.com/business/technology/denis-o-brien-teams-with-russian-oligarch-for-16bn-plan-1.2166739

"Denis O’Brien, the founder of Digicel, has reportedly been lined up to join the advisory board of a new fund, founded by a Russian oligarch, that plans to invest at least $16 billion (€14.6 billion) in the European telecoms market.

Mr O’Brien is due to join the advisory board of LetterOne Technology, a British-registered company founded by the Alfa Group’s Mikhail Fridman, whom Forbes says is Russia’s second-richest man, with a $15 billion fortune."
