Mexicans Pause in the Street to Greet IDF Soldiers Who Left Rosh Hashanah Behind to Aid Earthquake Recovery

As Jews across the globe made their final preparations for Rosh Hashanah, Mexico City was thrust into a nightmare when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the ground. In the face of such immense destruction and loss of life, the Jewish State quickly put the High Holy Day aside to aid in the aftermath of the earthquake.

According to the Jerusalem Post (JPost), on Wednesday, Israel sent a delegation of 71 Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and officers, primarily consisting of structural engineers, to Mexico to help scan and test buildings for risk of collapse.

“We left our homes ahead of the holiday but priority is always given to such a mission — to save lives, even if it is thousands of kilometers from home,” Col. Dudi Mizrahi, Commander of the National Search and Rescue Unit in the Home Front Command, told the Jerusalem Post. “It is a great honor for us to be part of this effort.”

The Times of Israel reported the Israelis brought special equipment that would enable them to detect cellphone signals in the rubble, and in November, the United Nations World Health Organization recognized Israel's emergency medical response team as “number one in the world.”
