The 28-year-old activist has not been seen since being arrested during a crackdown by the National Police on a protest of the Mapuche community.

Divers from the Naval Prefecture found a body in Argentina's Chubut River, a kilometer and a half of where Santiago Maldonado was last seen on Aug. 1.

Argentine officials and the Criminal Unit of the Federal Police will go to department of Cushamen to determine if the body is that of the missing activist, who has remained disappeared for 78 days.

Besides the implausibility of his being "found" after three searches complete with divers, drones, trained dogs, etc. turned up nothing, this body was a mile upstream from the spot he was last seen along the river. And past searches had already covered these areas.

Again, I should note that forensics haven't as yet determined who this was. But if this turns out to be Maldonado, he was clearly planted there.

Why? "Finding" him would give the Macri administration its best chance of dismissing the death as an accidental drowning with which federal forces had "nothing to do with." A very convenient way out - what with Amnesty International and the IACHR breathing down their necks and elections just four days away.

Thanks for posting this, Judi, and as always for your diligent research.
