Waitrose has removed tins of coffee from its shelves after furious customers claimed they showed black slaves cultivating beans while a white plantation owner looks on.

The containers, from the Italian brand Saquella 1856, are said to bear historic images of black slaves harvesting beans in Guatemala, a former Spanish colony.

Shoppers at the upmarket chain's branch at the Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury, London, complained to staff, who said they were 'shocked and appalled'.

(Posted to remind people that even tiny Guatemala, controlled by the Spanish, used African slaves to make them wealthy. Slavery was a much larger crime against far more sinned against innocent souls than is commonly acknowledged.)
