The real Frida look: Frida Kahlo’s clothes go on exhibit in Mexico after 50 years locked away
By Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, October 3, 5:08 PM

MEXICO CITY — The women on the cocktail circuit of the late 1930s were all curve-hugging dresses and gelled curls. Not Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo. She graced dinner parties and theaters from Paris to New York in ribbons, full skirts and loose peasant blouses embroidered with vividly colored flowers, and her uni-brow was a bold contrast to the pencil-line eyebrows of the time.

Over the years, Kahlo’s look has become as influential as her art, capturing the fancy of trendsetters from Madonna to French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. There are YouTube tutorials on how to braid hair like she wore hers, and Vogue Italy lets readers know where to shop for Kahloesque skirts and jewelry.

Now, a full collection from her wardrobe is going on display in Mexico City after being locked away for nearly 50 years in her armoires and dressers: jewelry, shoes and clothes that still carry the scent of the late artist’s perfume and cigarette smoke or stains from painting.

“She had a tremendous self-confidence. She was convinced that what she wore displayed who she was inside,” said Alejandra Lopez, art restorer for the painter’s home, now the Frida Kahlo Museum, where the collection will be shown starting Nov. 22 in an exhibit sponsored by Vogue Mexico.

Of course, he was unaware the was carrying out a bold artistic iconography.

I tried to grow a unibrow, upon learning about Frida, but am not equipped with that talent.

If any fans get to San Francisco, there's an amazing mural at City College, which is now broke and may shut down, so that the vultures may pick the money off the bones.

I'm sure she will see this very interesting article soon, and I must mention how sweet it is that you thought of her and her bee-yoo-tee-full avatar.

I'm hoping she's taking a time out and might look in. There's no replacement in sight, is there?

I believe Kurovsky has been in touch with her since we've seen her postings.

I remember she got a huge swarm of DU valentines this year! Tons of well-wishers, admirers, etc.

She was flamed in a thread there because some people questioned something she had done as a Host. That was about the time of her most recent post here on DU. I only discovered that Meta thread after I started missing her.

Tried a PM on DU3 and DU2 both. No joy.

Thanks for letting me know Kurovsky might have been in touch with her. Mainly I just want to know if she's OK. DU is a good message board but there are times when we need to just turn the page and I respect that.

she acknowledged that she was in error and yet was treated badly. She apologized. Mama mia Pedro! How often does THAT happen on DU? I'm not sure of how it all went down, and am fairly confused, as usual.

Maybe if we have a big apology party? I dunno.

In my eyes, for me, she is 25 percent of why I stopped in. Her knowledge of Latin America is stupendous. i cannot say how much I've learned from her. And the most important thing: she's made me laugh 5,000 times over the past years.

Damn that woman. Return I say! Return lest I engage in a desperate act involving a kitten and a gunny sack!

having established their patterns well before it came into being!

EFerrari may just be the most cared about person here. She has worked so hard at various times for different causes and people, completely beyond her self-interests. People will always remember that.

There is NOTHING EFerrari could do to make her unpopular with the people here. She's too big with all of us now!
EFarrari transcends!

I'm sure she would plead for the case of that wee kit if she only knew! Don't do anything hasty.

of Andy. I was relatively new here then, (first came here in November 2004) but will never forget how she organized that fundraiser over a weekend. It was truly awesome. I hope she is okay and just taking a break also.
