MIAMI, United States.- Fidel Castro's eldest son, Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart, committed suicide on the morning of this Thursday, February first, at 68 years of age, according to the official website Cubadebate .
According to the publication, Castro Díaz-Balart suffered from "a deep depressed state" for which "he had been treated by a group of doctors for several months."
"As part of his treatment, he initially required a hospitalization regime and then continued with outpatient follow-up during his social reincorporation," explained Cubadebate.
At the time of his death, Castro served as Scientific Advisor to the State Council and Vice President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, the note said.
Castro Díaz-Balart was the only son born from the first marriage of Fidel Castro with Mirtha Díaz-Balart and was popularly known as "Fidelito".
The publication concludes that "his funerals will be organized by family decision".
