Nicaragua dialogue: Leaders want repression ended and freedom restored. Ortega says "No"

Pressure grows on Nicaragua's Ortega as protest death toll hits 27
21 HOURS AGO

Thousands marched in the capital Managua following deadly protests over social security reforms during the previous days that left many dead and scores injured.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega was under pressure from widespread street unrest Monday despite backing down on a contentious pension reform plan that triggered days of violence in which at least 27 people have been killed.

Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets of the capital Managua in the evening hours to demand an end to the repression against protesters in the latest anti-government demonstration.

Workers, students, business people and ordinary residents carried Nicaraguan flags and wore white or black shirts as they marched peacefully while singing the national anthem or shouting slogans against the government and in favor of arrested students.

Students leading the protests vowed to keep up their demonstrations until the 72-year-old leader and his wife, vice-president Rosario Murillo, are ousted.

Businessmen, workers and student leaders stated that any dialogue needs two conditions: putting an end to repression and restoring freedom of expression. Ortega refused any conditions. The media will remained censored and the students/workers will remain jailed.

Online videos yesterday were telling. Chants of, “They were students, they weren’t criminals” and “Daniel and Somoza are the same

Another example of how The Revolution has become more important than the well being of the people.
