The Ministry of Health concealed from WHO a month information on the processing and isolation of poliovirus detected in a 2-year-old patient who presented with acute flaccid paralysis. The case resides in a population of Delta Amacuro

Caracas.- The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) confirmed on Friday the resurgence in Venezuela of polio , a disease that had been eradicated in the country for 29 years. The information of the PAHO reveals that the Ministry of Health was aware of the outbreak, which circulates in Delta Amacuro , since last April, although, to date, its authorities are still silent.



In a brief note, the agency noted that on June 7, 2018, the World Health Organization ( WHO ) received, through the WHO Regional Contact Point for the International Health Regulations, an unofficial report on the detection of a Vaccine poliovirus type 3 in a patient of Venezuelan nationality who presented acute flaccid paralysis.

The unofficial report received by PAHO is the one that was released on Thursday by the Venezuelan Society of Public Health and the Network Defend National Epidemiology in a statement. In the document they report that the regional authorities of the Ministry of Health of the Delta Amacuro state detected three cases with poliomyelitis in the community of La Playita del Volcán, one of the poorest indigenous settlement populations with the worst health conditions in the state. One of the three patients - a 5-year-old child - had been confirmed with the disease, according to the results of the tests analyzed and sent by the National Institute of Hygiene.
