Buenos Aires theater attacked by security forces

A downtown Buenos Aires theater was assaulted during the premiere of a documentary critical of Argentine President Mauricio Macri last night. There was at least one reported injury.

Assailants appeared at the ND Ateneo Theater at 8:06 last night, destroying the theater's glass entrance with cobbles in a brief attack.

Photographs identified at least one of the attackers as a female police officer. Another assailant can be seen fleeing on foot, while a police motorcycle trails closely but quickly turns away.

Former Security Secretary Sergio Berni, who managed to apprehend and photograph one of the attackers, a woman, before she fled, suffered a cut above the eye from flying glass.

"I and others saw a Gendarmerie (miltarized police) truck go by, and a minute later, these people appear," Professor Ariel Garbarz told C5N News anchor Gustavo Sylvestre, who was at the scene.

A bomb threat was called in to C5N studios minutes later, forcing the channel, the only one covering the event, to temporarily suspend its broadcast.

A difficult path

The incident took place as attendees gathered for the premiere of El camino de Santiago (Santiago's Path), a documentary dealing with the disappearance of artist and activist Santiago Maldonado exactly one year earlier.

Maldonado disappeared during an August 1, 2017, Gendarmerie attack on an indigenous Mapuche protest camp in Argentina's remote Patagonia region.

Initial claims by Security Minister Patricia Bullrich that officers were responding to gunfire were proven false by cell phone footage, which instead only showed Gendarmerie firing.

His body was ultimately found on the banks of the Chubut River 78 days later. It was found 1,300 feet upstream, and with an early state of decomposition that led some forensic experts to conclude that it had been in the water for no more than two weeks and was therefore likely planted.

"I can't understand why we have to endure things of this kind," the victim's brother, Sergio Maldonado, said. "There is no way to investigate when the State investigates itself. They keep misdirecting and putting out false leads."

A similar tactic was shown to be used - but never prosecuted - during incidents at an otherwise peaceful demonstration on behalf of Maldonado last September.

It's one of the sleaziest options when local constabularies start sticking their blunt noses into politics at the street level, setting up false flag operations, pretending to be protesters, attempting to create bogus images of the citizenry in order to cast a pall over popular perception of dissenters, and create public support for the cops when they pretend to "go after" unruly protesters.

This has been happening for decades, and deserves only the most intense rebukes, and it needs to be called out whenever anyone can penetrate the clumsy, ugly, dishonest attempts to create extreme polarity, and hostility toward anti-government actions to suppress or worse.

It's cheap, underhanded, disrespectful toward humanity, trying to manipulate them without their awareness.

Trollery taken to the next level.

Which, also like Trump, is about all he has left (30% approval, and falling).

There's never a shortage of what in Argentina are called Doña Rosas - older, right wing voters who will take Macri (and in earlier times, the dictatorships) at their word no matter what the evidence shows.

Some of the aphorisms you typically hear from them are:

"It's always the same with those long-haired hippies; they're all terrorists."

"Artists are degenerates."

"Feminists? Lesbians is more like it!"

"This country will never get ahead, what with all the greedy Jews and dirty Indians we've got - plus the Peruvians!"

"The leftists must have done it. They should be dropped into the sea like in the '70s - now there was a time!"

And more recently:

"Cristina took it all and Pope Francis is a traitor; Macri saved this country!"

Meanwhile, Macri's taken on over $100 billion in added foreign debt mostly to finance capital flight by his friends and supporters. But that's "their right!"

C'est la vie.

Macri glad-hands (presumably right-wing) senior citizens during the 2015 campaign.

He got 60% of their vote, and returned the favor by cutting pensions and medical benefits. Their children will get Macri's debt crisis.

The expressions on their befuddled, completely uninformed faces drive me insane! Just like U.S. Americans from a local chapter of VFW, or American Legionaires, etc.

I think a lot of them probably have deteriorated brains after decades of heavy drinking! They probably have to drink a lot to fight off fears of long-haired hippie, commie-types who are coming to rape their grandkids, and then make them have abortions, oh, and force them to go vote for progressive candidates like Kirchners, Lula, Bachelet, Correa, Lugo, Morales, Petro, etc. Blooming idiots! Great expression on Macri's face. Have never seen him putting on so much phoniness! Really piling it on, isn't he? Good grief.
