Venezuelan president Nicols Maduro survives drone assassination attempt

<snip>

"Chaos has struck Venezuela following an apparent foiled assassination attempt against the country’s embattled president, Nicolás Maduro.

Several drones armed with explosives were flown towards Maduro as he addressed a military parade in the capital Caracas on Saturday afternoon.

The drones did not reach Maduro, though it is not clear if they were shot down or exploded prematurely. The president survived unharmed while seven people were injured in the attack, the country’s information minister said in a statement from the presidential palace.

“At exactly 5.41pm in the afternoon several explosions were heard,” Jorge Rodríguez said. “The investigation clearly reveals they came from drone-like devices that carried explosives."

Charred windows were seen near the place where President Maduro was speaking

From the BBC report:
firefighters at the scene disputed the government's version of events, the Associated Press reports.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, three of them said the incident was actually a gas tank explosion inside an apartment, but did not provide further details, the news agency says.

A "bomba" (colloquial term for propane tank we routinely use for gas grills) exploded in an apartment. Most houses in Venezuela don't have a central gas line, they have to buy the propane and haul it in. They are getting more difficult to find, since people can't get them filled (PdVSA is running out) and people are using unsafe methods to get the last bit of gas out of them. Like heating them.

Faster than a CSI episode, Maduro had cracked the case wide open!

FWIW, several people were injured in the "attack". They were trampled by Chavistas heading towards the exits. One independent report said one officer had a rather nasty gash in his head when he was pushed off the viewing stand from behind by the brave Chavistas who was honoring Maduro.

It appears they are now trying spin control on various state networks for the show of panic by the military.
