'How Many More Women Have to Die?" Days After Lawmakers Reject Legalization Bill, Argentine Woman Dies From At-Home Abortion
"Secrecy saves no life. Secrecy kills."
by Andrea Germanos, staff writer
Less than a week after Argentine lawmakers rejected a bill that would have legalized some abortions, the apparent first casualty from their action has emerged: a woman died from complications from an at-home abortion.
According to the Argentine newspaper Clarín, the woman, a mother of a two-year-old and identified as "Liz," came to the hospital suffering from septic shock after she appeared to have induced an abortion using a cheap but dangerous folk remedyparsley. Doctors removed her uterus, but she did not improve. She died Monday night.
"How many more dead women and pregnant people do they need to understand that abortion should be legal, safe, and free in Argentina?" asked the National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion and the Web of Health Professionals for the Right to Decide in a joint statement.
"Secrecy saves no life. Secrecy kills. For 'Liz' and so many others, let there be a law!" they added.

(21,636 posts)A sentiment Macri himself no doubt shared, since it was known (as his close congressional ally Elisa Carrió confirmed) that he didn't want it passed; indeed, he didn't move a finger to press the Senate to pass it.
He did, however, want to seem vaguely supportive - while spending $4 million a year on health policy "consultants" like this:

Less than a week after the Argentine Senate rejected a groundbreaking bill that would have legalized abortion up to 14 weeks, the country has its first report of a woman who died due to a botched at-home abortion.
Clairín, Argentinas largest newspaper, reports that the victim was a 24-year-old mother of two, who has been referred to only as Elizabeth. On Sunday, according to reports, she attempted to induce a miscarriage at-home using parsley, which caused septic shock and infection. Though she was rushed to a hospital in Buenos Aires, where her uterus was removed, Elizabeth died on Tuesday.
According to Argentinas National Ministry of Health, approximately 500,000 illegal abortions are performed in the country each year, many of which result in dangerous complications. Just last week, the Senate had the opportunity to pass what wouldve been a historic bill to decriminalize abortion, which had already passed the lower house in June. Instead, the upper house voted down the bill in a move that activists decried as a huge step backwards.
Following reports of Elizabeths failed abortion, many of the same activists again spoke out, blaming the victims death on the Senates disregard for womens lives.
