Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil's presidential front-runner, stabbed at rally

Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro has been stabbed during a campaign rally.

The far-right politician was attacked in the midst of a crowd in in the city of Juiz de Fora, in the south-eastern state of Minas Gerais.

Hospital officials lsaid Bolsonaro had suffered a "deep" and life-threatening stab wound in his intestines and was in a "serious but stable" condition. He underwent surgery for injuries to his intestines and is expected to recover, hospital officials said.

The controversial politician, who has outraged many in Brazil with racist and homophobic comments, has performed strongly in recent polls since local courts barred former President Luiz 'Lula' da Silva.

Polls show that if da Silva fails in his attempt to overturn a ban on him, Bolsonaro, known as the 'Brazilian Trump' and the 'Hitler of the Tropics', would win the first round of voting on October 7.

He would, according to polls, likely lose in the October 28 runoff to either Marina Silva or Ciro Gomes, both center-leftists.

Bolsonaro winces in pain after being stabbed during a campaign rally earlier today. He is expected to make a full recovery.

São Paulo markets rose on news of the stabbing, on hopes the incident might bolster his far-right candidacy.

JUIZ DE FORA, Brazil (Reuters) - The leading candidate in Brazil’s presidential election is in serious but stable condition after being stabbed by an assailant at a campaign rally on Thursday, doctors said, pushing an already chaotic campaign into further disarray.

Far-right firebrand Congressman Jair Bolsonaro, a controversial figure who has enraged many Brazilians for years with divisive comments, but has a devout following among conservative voters, could take two months to fully recover and will spend at least a week in the hospital, said Dr. Luiz Henrique Borsato, who operated on the candidate.

. . .

He has openly praised Brazil’s military dictatorship and in the past said it should have killed more people.

In casting his vote on the floor of Congress for the 2016 impeachment of former President Dilma Rousseff, he dedicated his ballot to the military regime figure who oversaw the prison where Rousseff was jailed for three years and brutally tortured.

Stabbing of a leading Brazilian candidate could reshape race
By MAURICIO SAVARESE AND SARAH DILORENZO, ASSOCIATED PRESS
RIO DE JANEIRO — Sep 7, 2018, 12:03 AM ET

The wounding of a leading Brazilian presidential candidate has the potential to reshape the election contest after dramatically exposing the deep polarization in Latin America's largest nation.

Far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain who has promised to crack down on crime, has long argued that Brazil is in chaos and needs a strong hand to be steadied.

. . .

Instead, Bolsonaro, despite being a congressman since 1991, has harnessed much of the anger and presented himself as a maverick who will clean up a corrupt system. He also promises to confront a surge in crime, in part by giving police a freer hand to shoot and kill while on duty.

. . .

He speaks nostalgically about the country's 1964-1985 military dictatorship and has promised to fill his government with current and former military leaders. His vice presidential running mate is a retired general.

Jair Bolsonaro: tropical Trump who hankers for days of dictatorship
The far-right Brazilian presidential candidate injured in a knife attack is an ex-paratrooper known for lashing out at women, black, gay and indigenous people and foreigners

Jair Bolsonaro, who has been seriously injured in a knife attack while campaigning to become Brazil's next president is a polarising figure in an unpredictable election campaign.

He has praised Pinochet, expressed support for torturers and called for political opponents to be shot, earning him the label of “the most misogynistic, hateful elected official in the democratic world”.

. . .

He paints himself as a tropical Trump: a pro-gun, anti-establishment crusader set on draining the swamp into which Brazil’s futuristic capital has sunk.

. . .

On the stump – and broadcasting to his 5 million Facebook followers – he lambasts not slimeballs and bad hombres, but vagabundos (losers), canalhas (creeps) and bandidos (crooks).

Personally, I wish him a speedy recovery and all the best to his family.

That said, the incident is also unfortunate in the sense that he'll profit politically from it.

And you're absolutely right.

Plus, there may be more to this story.

There's already some reason to believe the attack was staged: The weapon looked like a retractable plastic prop; no blood on the knife at all, or his shirt or the white towel applied at the time; no gloves, oxygen mask, or blood in the ER; the fact that Bolsonaro's sons knew the assailant; his unusually speedy recovery, etc.

I'll reserve judgment for the time being, as it's still early. But I certainly wouldn't put it past him.

He's already in outpatient care, which is good. If he was genuinely injured, my best wishes to him for a full recovery; if not, may the truth come out.

9. It appears Jair Bolsonario's terrifying "attack" has brought out the compassionate Samaritan

in you, a totally unexpected projection.

It would be hard to make a martyr of a man who proudly supports the military dictatorship with its torture, kidnapping, terrorism, and so many murdered suspected political enemies. The Catholic Church compiled a volume of the testimonies of survivors of the dictatorship's tortures, and put them together for publication in its work named "Never More." Very, very sad. Bolsonaro celebrates the monsters who committed the atrocities.

The very attempt to envision a right-wing monster as a martyr could make a person ill.

A martyred racist bullying sociopath. Amazing.

His face in the bogus "news" photo of the attack doesn't reflect any fear, or true discomfort, just a lot of bad acting.

Maybe the person who cried the loudest over the news was the woman Bolsonaro told was too ugly for him to consider raping.
