How Maduro's coup took over Venezuela:

Step 1:
Take over the Supreme Court by adding new seats and fill them with lackeys.

Step 2:
Find an excuse to hold the opposition-controlled parliament in contempt of court.
Declare the parliament illegitimate.

Step 3:
Hold an election for an assembly that shall write a new constitution that will bring the country back together again. Manipulate the election.

Step 4:
Have the Constituent National Assembly, which you control, take over functions of the parliament to further delegitimize it.

Step 5:
Move on as if the actions of your regime are totally normal. Have yourself re-elected as President by manipulating yet another election.

But the US talking to members of the opposition totally counts as a coup!!!

Let's not forget the all Chavista CNE who decides who can/can't run for office, and what hoops they must jump through in order to do so. Google Tibesay Lucena for more.
