Doctor says 104-year-old Brazilian architect Niemeyer is 'getting better daily'
By The Associated Press November 11, 2012

RIO DE JANEIRO - The doctor treating famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer says the 104-year-old is "getting better every day."

Fernando Gjorup says a flu Niemeyer caught several weeks ago led to dehydration, which compromised his kidneys.

Speaking at a news conference Sunday, Gjorup said that while Niemeyer's kidneys are not yet functioning normally, "he's moving in the right direction."

Niemeyer celebrates his 105th birthday in December and the doctor says he is "lucid," is breathing and eating without the aid of machines and has received a steady stream of visitors since he was hospitalized at Rio de Janeiro's Hospital Samaritano on Nov. 2.

It's not clear when he will be released.

Niemeyer designed much of Brazil's futuristic capital, Brasilia.

He's a great man. Not only a brilliant architect, but also a great sculptor and his lucidity is impressive. He is still working, making projects and in 2008 he was able to carry out one of his dreams: to built a monument in Cuba in honor to the Revolution:

Monument "Uma bandeira frente a um império" ("A flag standing against an empire&quot , in the Niemeyer Square, La Habana, Cuba.
