Rescued circus elephant Ramba arrives at Brazil sanctuary

An Asian elephant that spent decades performing in South American circuses has started a new life in an open-air sanctuary in Brazil, after travelling thousands of kilometers by plane and truck from a Chilean zoo.

Ramba's much-anticipated arrival at the 1,133-hectare (2,800-acre) Elephant Sanctuary Brazil in the central west state of Mato Grosso late Friday was broadcast live on Facebook and viewed thousands of times.

The elephant, estimated to be more than 52 years old, worked in circuses in Argentina and Chile before she was rescued by activists in 2012.

She was then kept in a roadside zoo in Rancagua, in central Chile, while her rescuers searched for a new home.

Her ordeal left her with abscesses as well as kidney and liver problems.

Ramba was flown to the Viracopos international airport near Sao Paulo on Wednesday -- a day before heavily armed gunmen raided the cargo terminal in a daring heist.

She was then transported by flat-bed truck to the sanctuary in Chapada dos Guimaraes, which was opened in 2016 with the help of US-based Global Sanctuary for Elephants (GSE) -- the first of its kind in Latin America.

Ramba the elephant had a tough start to life. She spent 14 years in a circus, where, according to local media, she was mistreated.

Luckily for Ramba, she was rescued and spent the past several years in a Chilean zoo.

But, on Tuesday Ramba began what will likely be the biggest journey of her life when she was loaded into a transportation pen and began the trek to her new home in an elephant sanctuary in Brazil.

From the zoo in Racangua, Chile, Ramba was taken to Santiago's international airport where she was awaiting her airplane to arrive Tuesday night.

RAMBA, THE LAST CIRCUS ELEPHANT IN CHILE, IS NOW SAFE AT HER SANCTUARY HOME
Posted by Heather Shields | October 17, 2019

Fifty-year-old Asian elephant, Ramba — “elephant in Chilean” — is finally free! After surviving 40 years in a circus and seven in a roadside zoo, she has arrived at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil in Chapada dos Guimarães, where she will spend the rest of her life in peace and tranquility.

After learning of her story, Chilean animal welfare organization Ecopolis reached out to Global Sanctuary for Elephants for assistance with obtaining her release. Ramba finally gained her freedom from her life of torment and agony, but as no sanctuary of this kind existed in South America at the time, she ended up waiting confined in a roadside zoo.

This is sadly a common situation. After animals are released from exploitative and abusive situations like circuses, there is often no place for them to go. Even if there are homes waiting, often they do not have the resources, space, or trained professionals to give the rescued animal a truly healthy and happy life. In certain instances, the new homes do not provide any respite as other forms of abuse and cruel practices await the animals there.

Thankfully, Global Sanctuary for Elephants stepped in again and, in partnership with Dr. Joyce Poole of ElephantVoices, created Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. Scott Blais, the CEO of Global Sanctuary for Elephants, hopes that the sanctuary will provide comfort for Ramba and be a place where she can feel peace and happiness.
