10 grizzly bears relocated from Argentina to Colorado

DENVER (AP) - Ten grizzly bears from a zoo in Argentina are adjusting to their new home at Colorado´s Wild Animal Sanctuary.

The bruins were flown from Argentina to Dallas then driven to Keenesburg, north of Denver, in late November.

After an adjustment period, sanctuary officials plan to move the bears to a 50-acre habitat near Springfield.

Wildlife Animal Sanctuary director Pat Craig tells Colorado Public Radio that the sanctuary is the next best thing to living in the wild.

The bears come from the Mendoza Zoological Park in the Mendoza Province near the Chilean border. The zoo was the subject of protests for housing a polar bear that died in 2016.

KEENESBURG, Colo., Nov. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Their giant, padded feet only ever knew concrete, cobblestones and rock; and for one large male, a sunken pit was his 'home' for 19 years. But after a 5,521 mile journey, ten Grizzly Bears from the Mendoza Zoological Park in Argentina are beginning a new life in Colorado at The Wild Animal Sanctuary.

After an initial period of adjustment in a smaller habitat, they will be transferred to a 50-acre (20+ hectares) habitat at the Sanctuary's new Refuge also located in Colorado.

Like other zoos in Argentina, the Mendoza Zoological Park closed as a zoological facility more than two years ago and is being refashioned into an Eco-Park. Since that time the ten bears have been awaiting a new home.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary was chosen by zoo officials because of its large, natural habitats and nearly 40-year history of rescuing large carnivores.

KEENESBURG, Colo., Nov. 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- After spending years in a barren, concrete grotto enclosure at the Buenos Aires Zoo, three rare Spectacled Bears find new life and an unimaginably wonderful new home at the Wild Animal Refuge in Colorado, an extension of the Wild Animal Sanctuary also located in Colorado.



According to animal care staff members, Pina, Nico and Tupak are settling-in very well after their long journey and are quickly adjusting to their new life. After being given time to adjust to their new surroundings in a smaller enclosure and to be thoroughly medically evaluated, they will live in a 250-acre (101 hectares) bear habitat at the enormous property which encompasses over 15 square miles (38 square kilometres) of naturally forested land.

Since 2016 the three bears have been awaiting a new home upon the closure of the Buenos Aires Zoo, a decision made by the city due to degrading conditions at the 140-year old facility.

The three fortunate bears will join a number of other animals already at the Refuge, including two tigers and a lion living in their own habitat nearby.
