Chilean lawmakers censure ex-interior minister over rights abuses

Andres Chadwick, a cousin and close confidant of center-right President Sebastian Pinera, resigned under pressure shortly after protests began in October, part of a cabinet shake-up designed to quell increasingly violent riots.

In a 12-hour marathon session, senators voted 23-18 to punish the ex-interior minister, accusing him of violating the Constitution by failing to stem human rights violations. Lawmakers also said Chadwick failed to maintain public order as chaos swept through the country.

Nearly two months of protests over inequality have rocked Chile, leaving at least 26 dead, thousands injured and billions of dollars of damage in the once-stable South American nation.

The motions to censure Chadwick required a simple majority in both the House and the Senate. Chadwick is now barred from holding public office for five years.

As Interior Minister at the time, Chadwick oversaw the Carabineros - and is thus ultimately responsible. He either deliberately looked the other way or (most likely) instructed them outright to be brutal against protesters.

In neighboring Argentina, the now-former Security Minister Patricia Bullrich is herself facing charges for the deaths of two indigenous rights activists (the Maldonado and Nahuel cases), as well as for using security forces for political ends (warrantless surveillance, frame-ups) and other excesses.

She reportedly wants to run for president in 2023 - but may well find herself in house arrest by then (or exile in Miami).

These characters are finding that abuses of power are not the easy, impunity-cloaked affairs they used used to be in that part of the world.

Carabineros have had a horrible image for a long time. What a shame there doesn't seem to have been any significant change in their approach to their jobs.

Bullrich is a wildly determined politician. It's doubtful she is ever going to stop pushing ahead, if her alcohol problem doesn't get the best of her! Her bad habit could overtake her, maybe, and save the world a whole lot of trouble.

Glurg.

Looks as if it's so commonly known now they actually have been doing political cartoons of her and her habit!

The very thought of her trying to campaign with her proclivities leaves a person a little skeptical. Of course, any drunk would probably sound a whole lot better than a Trump, no mater how drunk he/she was.

I've seen that last drawing (?) before, but never noticed her U.S. American neck scarf. Whoa!

Looks as if the political cartoonist knew more about her than most ordinary folks! Macri used her for U.S. chores it seems.
