Amazon deforestation for January hits record

Rio de Janeiro (AFP)

Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil more than doubled in January compared with the previous year, according to official data published Friday.

More than 280 square kilometers (110 square miles) were cleared, an increase of 108 percent. It was the largest area cleared in the month of January since 2015, when such data started being collected, according to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

The data was collected by the INPE's satellite-based DETER system, which monitors deforestation in real time.

In comparison, 136 square kilometers were cleared in January 2019, 183 square kilometers in 2018 and 58 square kilometers in 2017.

INPE data published in mid-January found that deforestation in the Amazon in northern Brazil had soared 85 percent in 2019, clearing 9,166 square kilometers -- the highest number in at least five years -- versus 4,946 square kilometers cleared in 2018.

2. What drives this: meat-eating, palm oil

Amazon rainforest is being cleared for cattle raising, and for growing soybeans and other crops to feed cattle, elsewhere rainforests are being mowed down for palm oil plantations.

The solution?

STOP. EATING. MEAT.

And anything containing palm oil.

The markets will dry up. The devastation stops. The animal cruelty stops. The destruction of our planet stops.

What the hell is the matter with humans that they can not figure this out?

Really?

Come at me with myriad excuses about habits, economy, "nutrition" (meat-eating is unhealthy for humans and the planet), markets or whatever.

None of it is acceptable reason for our inability to stop this.

And STOP ELECTING Trumps all over the world - that would help (Bolsonaro, Trump, Boris Johnson - Australia's President - all of them think climate change is a "hoax&quot .

How dumb are humans? Sheesh. Too dumb to survive without destroying themselves and the only planet they have to live on. Wow.
