Muralist Kobra finds inspiration in confinement

Professionally speaking, coronavirus confinement is not exactly good for street artists. But famed Brazilian muralist Kobra says he found inspiration staying at home -- and is using it to help those hit by the pandemic.

Eduardo Kobra -- the 44-year-old artist's full name -- is known around the world for his brightly colored, kaleidoscopic murals.

Among other things, he has set the Guinness World Record, twice, for largest spray-paint mural: first with an acclaimed piece painted by him and his team for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, then with an even bigger work in his native Sao Paulo the following year.

But what does a street artist from the urban jungle, used to traveling the world and working outdoors at massive scale, do when he is confined to his residence in a sleepy provincial town?

Brazilian Graffiti Artist Creates World’s Largest Street Mural For The Rio Olympics

Street art isn’t an Olympic sport, but if it were, then Eduardo Kobra would almost certainly win gold for his 30,000 square foot (2787 square meters) wall mural that he painted for this year’s Rio Olympics.

The mural, titled Las Etnias (The Ethnicities), stands a staggering 50 feet (15 meters) tall and can be found in Rio’s port district. The graffiti drawing features five faces from five different continents that represent both the five Olympic rings as well as the cultural diversity of the games. Kobra, 40, from Sao Paulo, worked on the piece for two months, and during that time, the street artist used 100 gallons of white paint, 400 gallons of colored paint, and 3,500 cans of spray paint. If confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records, Kobra’s beautiful artwork will be the world’s largest mural completed by a single man.

“These are the indigenous people of the world,” says Kobra on the Rio 2016 official website. “The idea behind this graffiti artwork is that we are all one. We’re living through a very confusing time with a lot of conflicts. I wanted to show that everyone is united; we are all connected.”
