We Must Find Out The Authorship of the Yanomami Genocide, Says Minister

Holder of the Human Rights cabinet, Silvio Almeida, says that there was an unprecedented omission in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and that there are already enough elements to point to a crime

Minister Silvio Almeida (Human Rights and Citizenship) says there are already enough elements to argue that there has been a crime of genocide committed against the Yanomami people. In his opinion, all they need to do now is to find out the authorship. "You don't get a tragedy of this magnitude without accountability", he says in an interview with Folha. "There has never been an action that had the deliberate character of turning one's back on the problem, at least not in this way, with a process of dismantling institutions", he says. According to him, there are strong indications of omission by the then president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the then minister (now senator) Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF).

Almeida also defends the creation of a new economy for the Yanomami to prevent them from falling back into the mining cycle. He also suggests the creation of a career for human rights workers and defends severe punishment for the January 8 coup-plotting vandals. "Every coup-mongering individual is potentially a violator of human rights and, obviously, does not respect citizenship", he says. "To defend human rights, therefore, is to defend the punishment of these people to the full extent of the law".
