Evo Morales Asks Chile for Sea Access Proposal

Evo Morales Asks Chile for Sea Access Proposal
Written by Charlotte Meritan on February 6, 2013.

President Sebastián Piñera stated that access to the sea would be offered to Bolivia. In the aftermath of this declaration, Evo Morales has asked for an official proposal.

SANTIAGO — The maritime conflict between Chile, Peru and Bolivia continue to hinder diplomatic relations in South America. After Bolivian President Evo Morales took advantage of the Celac summit to reiterate his demand for sea access, both presidents replied to each other through the national media.

President Piñera committed himself to offer “autonomy in a territorial enclave in the border area” in an interview he gave to Chilean newspaper La Tercera, to which Morales hastened to answer.

Yesterday, the president of Bolivia publicly asked for an official proposal from Chile, so that Bolivia could gain access to the sea as soon as possible. However, it is not question of sovereignty anymore, since President Piñera didn’t concede this point and Morales eventually seemed to accept the compromise of “autonomy”.

“We are waiting for an official proposal by the Chilean government. What exactly is this enclave? We would like to know, because until now there has been no official proposal made by the government of Chile,” Morales said in a press conference.
