http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013/02/06/venezuela-corruption-charges.htmlCorruption accusations and insults are flying between allies and opponents of President Hugo Chavez nearly two months after the Venezuelan leader disappeared from the political stage to undergo cancer surgery in Cuba.
----------------
National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello on Tuesday night accused three lawmakers in the Justice First party of involvement in corruption.
Opposition leaders responded on Wednesday, saying members of the party are totally innocent and that senior government officials are the ones who have enriched themselves during Chavez's 14 years in office.
----------
By raising corruption claims, the government is also seeking to deflect attention from problems such as shortages of some staple foods, a weakening currency and rampant violent crime, said Carrasquero, a political science professor at Simon Bolivar University in Caracas.

(7,362 posts)Let's say you were the type of person who wanted to enrich yourself at the expense of the country:
why would you possibly join the side that has been out of power for 14 years and in fact controls almost nothing?

(6,837 posts)but yes, the most corrupt are those currently in the ruling power.
They are going after Capriles. The farce of keeping Chavez "alive" can't last forever. They need to beat down the opposition for the upcoming new election.

$700 million from the Aben Pearl. Stolen. Gone. Kaput. To a small circle of "go betweeners." It's inconceivable.

So yes, these corruption charges are indeed attempts to weaken the opposition in preparation for a post-Chavez transition.
Because the Venezuelan military leadership is so politicized, I also believe there's a strong possibility of a military coup if an opposition candidate appears to be heading for an election win.
