Automaker GM under investigation in India for ‘corporate fraud’

Indian government officials were tight-lipped Tuesday over claims a transport ministry panel had accused US auto giant General Motors of “corporate fraud” over faulty engine-emission tests.

The Times of India and other local media said a government investigation had alleged that senior GM India executives violated engine testing norms and committed fraud.

The three-member panel probing the alleged violations by GM India submitted its report to the Ministry of Road Transport earlier this week, a department spokesman told AFP.

“We are considering the report and can make no further comment,” the spokesman said.

German auto-maker BMW has a chip installed in its engines to steer them effectively. However that chip also reads the style of driving and is able to recognize whether the car is driving on the road or whether it's driving on a treadmill in a test-facility.

If that chip recognizes that the car is being tested, it manipulates the engine to run with less performance and less exhaust fumes.
