’19 Kids and Counting’ isn’t the only TLC show that had a brush with child molesters

While Josh Duggar and his family are currently under fire after the revelation that he molested underage girls, this is not the first time such incidents have come out in connection to stars on The Learning Channel (TLC) or its sister network, the Discovery Channel. Both networks are owned by Discovery Communications.

June Shannon, aka “Mama June” from Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, raised this point earlier in the day on Friday, when she complained about TLC’s hesitation to act even after Duggar admitted to molesting his sisters and other girls when he was a teenager.

“I read that the Duggar family said, this happening with their son brought them closer to God and each other,” Shannon said at the time. “So they’re saying it’s OK to have family touch time? Hell no.”

Ultimately, the network pulled 19 Kids and Counting from its schedule, much as it did to Shannon’s show after she resumed a relationship with Mark McDaniel, who served a 10-year prison sentence for molesting another one of Shannon’s daughters, Anna Shannon, when the girl was 8 years old.

Supporters rallied around the Duggar family after they admitted to keeping quiet about their eldest son molesting young girls – including his own sisters.

Josh Duggar, his wife, and his parents issued statements Thursday confirming reports that he had engaged in “inexcusable” behavior more than a decade ago, when he was 14 years old, and he resigned his job with the anti-LGBT Family Research Council as calls poured into TLC to cancel the long-running “19 Kids and Counting.”

However, the Duggars’ defenders offered prayers and messages of support on social media.

“This shouldnt even be in the news,” said Stephanie Truesdell in a Facebook comment. “Its not current. Its done, over, and hes been forgiven. None of us, as fans/viewers, whatever, have any need to say anything. It was reported, and its been handeled. Its over.”

Mike Huckabee says you’re a bad person if you enjoy watching the Duggars fall from grace

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee offered a full-throated defense Friday of the embattled Duggar family against the “blood-thirsty media” reporting on molestation claims involving their eldest son.

“No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility,” said Huckabee, a family friend and former Arkansas governor, in a Facebook post.

Josh Duggar resigned his post Thursday with the anti-LGBT Family Research Council after admitting to “inexcusable” actions when he was 14 – described in police reports as fondling the sex organs of his younger sisters and other girls.

“Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things,” Huckabee said. “The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand—that being a minor means that one’s judgement (sic) is not mature.”
