Obama Administration Makes Malaysia Slavery Problem For TPP Disappear

The Trans-Pacific Partnership: the dirtiest trade deal, you've never heard of

Obama Administration Makes Malaysia Slavery Problem For TPP Disappear
By Dave Johnson

The fast-track authority legislation for the Trans-Pacific Partnership recently passed by Congress says we can't make "trade" agreements like TPP with countries that violate human rights. There is a report that to get around this rule the administration is going to declare the worst violators of human rights to be OK after all.

The still-secret TPP is close to being completed. Once that happens it comes to Congress. But the trade promotion authority law that preceded it prohibits the U.S. from entering into "trade" agreements with "tier 3" human-trafficking countries.

According to news reports, the Obama administration found an easy -- and extremely cynical -- fix: just change Malaysia's rating to a "tier 2." Problem solved. But human rights groups, labor and members of Congress are "outraged," "shocked" and "deeply disturbed." They are trying to warn the State Department off from doing this.

~snip~

Human trafficking? Slavery? Sex slaves? People kept in cages? Mass graves? Abuse of workers? No problem. Just tell the State Department to ignore it. If this happens the Obama administration will undermine the integrity of our country's human rights efforts to increase the profit and power of a few giant multinational corporations.

As is usual, this is likely a done deal.. The pattern seems to be announce shit like this, sneer at the outrage, and then ram it up, er, through. I think we are approaching the point where one really cannot use "integrity" in any description of Corporate America.

I'm just dumbfounded. I feel guilty for buying into the Hope and Change thing. It was just bullshit. Just more corporate control over govt. Hillary will be even worse.

I was so happy when Senator Obama won in 2008 !!!!

I cried with utter joy when this man was sworn in.

I have long lost any admiration or respect for him.

How different things could have been.

promoting labor laws & rule of law, let us do no business with those who do not adopt our rule of law for laborers and human rights...instead, the bastards want to bring the USA down to that level (third worlders) while they seek to give approval to the worst abusers of all.

TPP is a cancer. Whomever is fast tracking this & aiding it along, they too are a cancer. This is saying no business, no corporation, multinational or otherwise will be held accountable. They seek to void humanity & sovereignty of nations in favor of big business, and they want it to go global.

This is like slitting the throats of every citizen, and ending government by the people in favor of gov't by the soul-less corporations.

TY, SCOTUS! You too ought to be ousted & there need to be term limits. Absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

Reagan made all those human rights abuses and murders disappear in Nicaragua, and Guatemala, just by certifying them.
