Sales rise 0.2% in January; car dealers, Internet stores lead way

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Sales at retailers got off to a solid start in 2016 despite a big snowstorm that slammed the eastern part of the U.S. late in the month.

Retail sales rose 0.2% in January, as consumers boosted purchases of new cars as well as groceries and shopped more online.

Sales in December were sharply revised higher to show a 0.2% gain instead of a 0.1% decline, the Commerce Department said Friday. So sales weren’t as weak at year-end as had been first estimated.

Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected sales to be flat in January, held down in large part by lower gasoline prices.
